at least once per day, inspect the gauge for accumulated rainfall. If
there is water in the collecting vessel, then empty enough of that so that 5 mm
of rain can be measured in the measuring vessel. For more than 5 mm, measure in
parts and add the total. Very small amounts will not be measured with this
arrangement, and accuracy of 0.5 mm is about the best that can be achieved.
Place the measuring float into the measuring flask, and let it float on
to the top of the water. The further out of the flask the float protrudes, the
greater the rainfall amount - this can be determined by counting down from the
reference marker (the small screw) how many mm or half-mm points can be felt
before the rim of the flask is reached.
